The humble potato.

Thousands of varieties exist throughout the world. From the large, floury Russet or Idaho potato as it’s known in the US, to the small waxy New potatoes, we find them everywhere — our kitchens, restaurants, supermarkets, and farms. But for something so commonly found, how much do we actually know about it?

History

Potatoes find their roots dating back nearly 10,000 years ago, where what is now modern-day Peru, and Bolivia, they were domesticated and farmed. Then, sometime at the end of the 16th Century, they arrived into Europe via the ports in Spain and the British Isles.

It was from Europe that the potato managed to spread throughout the world. Thanks to the voyages of European colonists, potatoes were brought along where ever they went. And where they went, they were welcomed (the potatoes, not the colonists). And now, the potato has become a staple found in many parts of the world, and into many cuisines and cultures.

Often, when something is as ubiquitous as the potato is, it goes unnoticed in the background and taken for granted. But today, you will develop at new found appreciation for everybody’s…
